Andrea Maurer at Sommerszene

“Gesprächsgegenstände”

26th, 27th & 28th of June, Sommerszene, SZENE Salzburg (AT)

3rd, 4th & 5th of July, Sommerszene, SZENE Salzburg (AT)

One of the many hidden rooms in the SZENE Salzburg’s building will become a discussion room both in the literal sense of the word and in reality: the room will speak. The visitor will already be involved in a discussion when he enters the room, a discussion that raises several questions. Catapulted into the midst of this discussion, the visitor finds himself surrounded by everyday objects that speak about their material nature. The objects throw meanings and their purpose overboard, question their very existence and ignore clear answers. The visitor is left with no option but to seek his own explanations. There is no getting around it: a smoking table speaks unprompted, a plant speaks when touched, wooden boards prefer to sing. In her installation “Gesprächsgegenstände”, Andrea Maurer prepares an ensemble of objects using an unconventional mixture of analogue and digital techniques. She attempts to explore the links between objects and meanings, between outer appearances and functions, in order to turn the relationship between words and objects.

“Poelstra stolpert, Maurer sägt”
18th of June, brut Wien (AT)
An empty space, or rather, a space full of potentiality. A stage? An office? A research center? A therapeutic room for dubious objects? Poelstra and Maurer get to work with a bonedry sense of realism. On their way towards language they create a world in which everything is as it is while it could also be totally different. ‘Consider the absent is just as certainly present as the present’ said Parmenides long ago about the possibilities of perceiving. Poelstra and Maurer marvel at things and situations, overshoot the goal, surrender to coincidence, speak or simply keep still. With complete conviction they challenge determined sense and get tied up in contradictions of opposites. While Poelstra stumbles into everything out of nothing, Maurer shortly saws apart the length of time. At the end comes what goes.
